Once again having accuracy boosting equipment is vital for using this attack as a primary. Commander is 105% damage and -40 accuracy, Commander is 110% damage and -30 accuracy. At Lieutenant it is 100% damage with -50 accuracy, Lt. This ability is the cannons version of FAW but unlike its beam counterpart this ability does not have a damage penalty but actually gets a boost, but it does have an accuracy debuff. Any enemies (up to 3) within a 90º arc of the primary target will also take fire. It creates a cone of fire around your target. This ability was slightly modified from the old version but really it did not effect serious change in how the ability works or how a player might use it, so I’ll skip to the current effects. One thing that the STO Wiki says is that the weapons draw 50% more power than normal with this attack, but since they are firing at half the speed, there is effectively no difference in overall weapon power drain.Ĭannons: Scatter Volley aka SV: This has been my standard goto ability for tactical minded toons. On my beam boats I do keep a low level FAW attack to deal with those annoyances like the Tholian webs, but the main attacks are all using overload. In my opinion this is the best beam attack. So now at Ensign you get a 50% reduction in firing speed with a 3x damage boost. It also uses the same weapon cycle as normal except the firing speed is reduced but you get multiple overloaded shots. The new overload is MUCH better because it does not have that huge drain on weapon power. This was another attack that relied heavily on players using accuracy buffs. Remember a normal beam array fires multiple shots per cycle, the old BO fired just the one. If you missed the target it was a waste of time and your energy weapons only had 1/2 as much weapon power until you could recover it. There was then a 50% power drain to weapons following the attack. The beam weapon would fire a single shot at your target with 5-8 times the normal power depending on the rank of the BOff ability. If you time it right you can have your beams firing almost continuously, this is how the DPS always looks so good with FAW.īeams: Overload aka: BO: This attack used to be a one shot hit or miss. That means a second instance of FAW can’t be activated until 20 seconds after the first one is activated. The ability has a ten second operating period and a 30 second cool down, globally it is 20 seconds. Commander in which it hits at 90% power and -30 accuracy. At Lieutenant its 85% power and -40 accuracy. Players relying on FAW should by all means use weapons with accuracy boosts. At Ensign the ability hits with 80% power and -50 accuracy. The ability still works great on Tholian Webs and buzzy little micro enemies, but not at the expense of firing on your actual target. Each target will get five attacks up to a total of ten per cycle. If there is no other targetable enemy the ability will only attack the main target. Now the ability will attack the primary target AND another random target if one exists. But the current FAW works a little differently. The idea is to wear down the shield facing to expose the hull. STAR TREK ONLINE TACTICAL BUILD 2019 SERIESWithout a followup series of shots a single beam hit does very little damage to an individual target, the shields soak it up and it’s over. But the problem with it was the random part. It was great for eliminating annoying carrier pets, mines, heavy torpedos, Tholian webs and so on. Then look at the beams vs cannons overall.īeams: Fire at Will aka: FAW: This attack used to be a random targeting attack. So first I want to go over each of the four basic energy weapon tactical bridge officer attack abilities. I wrote about the Beam Overload change here which was probably the most significant change made among the weapon attack changes. Some time back Cryptic changed the attack abilities of both beams and cannons, so my previous argument is now out of date. But I argued against FAW as a rule because it randomly targets enemies and in the end I showed that FAW doesn’t kill enemies as fast as Canons or Beams with Overload. The DPS counters were all in on King Beam most using multiple instances of FAW. I wrote a blog piece on this site several years ago about the beams versus cannons debate that was at the time raging.
